CHCSA Meeting Minutes April 12 2007

In attendance: Eva Sylwester, Angela Wu, Allison Rowe, Samantha Johnson, Adam Kendall, Daniel Keller, Mary Kay Bansmer, Amber Byron and Erin Davis.

Ashland: Erin and Amber have done a wonderful job of organizing this trip. They held the first of two pre-trip meetings last week, and collected $30 from each interested student. Total checks collected amounts to about $450, all of which will go to covering trip costs. There are currently 25 seats reserved right now for no charge, and 19 people signed up. They will meet again before the trip.

Any students still interested should contact either Erin or Amber. There will be 2 plays, one covered by the student and one by the CHCSA.

For transportation, they have 2 “yes” answers for driving, but 6 “maybe” answers, so they hope to convince more people to drive soon! For reimbursing gas, it can be done by the mile, or instead tanks can be filled before & after the trip, and the CHC will pay the difference.

Potluck Dinner with Professor Bishop: Adam, Samantha and Angela can give people rides to this event as needed. Please email Adam or Angela regarding what type of food or drink you intend to bring.

Camping Trip: May 18th-19th at Fern Ridge. Daniel is organizing this event and should be contacted if anyone has questions.

There are flyers in the Chapman halls regarding these events, as well.

Science Search committee: The committee is still in negotiations with Samantha Hopkins, and has created a faculty position for her husband as well.

VLT: The play, “Man of La Macha” followed the CHCSA meeting, and was a great success.

Bylaws Committee: Next meeting Thursday, April 19th at 4:30. Each member will bring a copy of their revised section and email Adam a copy. The meeting will be held in the CHC lounge.

CHCSA Meeting Notes March 15 2007

In attendance: Eva Sylwester, Angela Wu, Allison Rowe, Samantha Johnson, Adam Kendall, Emily Casey, Daniel Keller, Mary Kay Bansmer.

The Very Little Theater trip is coming next week on Thursday, April 12. Tickets are $5 per person, and the play is “Man of La Mancha”. The show starts at 8PM and seating is reserved so there is no worry about arriving early. Interested students should contact Adam Kendall at Akendall@uoregon.edu.

The potluck with Professor Bishop will be happening this term on Saturday, April 21st at 6:30pm.

The Ashland trip is set for May 5th. The organizers of this event will be submitting more information at the next general meeting, so keep checking back.

All of these events have sigh-up sheets in the hall of Chapman, with email addresses of CHCSA officers if anyone would like more information.

The Hi-Five Clark Honors College trivia team will be traveling to Portland on April 9th to challenge OSU! Details about the broadcast date will be posted when we know.

Professor Kraus and Kate Kevern proposed an Honors College Weekly Movie Night. Details are still being worked out, but this will most likely be held in the CHC Library in the evening. Snacks are allowed, and students will be encouraged to bring comfy pillows and blankets. Students can work on their homework, chat, and watch movies.

CHCSA Meeting Minutes March 1, 2007

In attendance: Eva Sylwester, Angela Wu, Allison Rowe, Samantha Johnson, Adam Kendall, Emily Casey, Daniel Keller, Mary Kay Bansmer, Amber Byron and Erin Davis.

Search Committee Updates: The Honors College has decided to extend an offer to Travis Zadeh for the Literature Professorship. One of the three Geology candidates has already visited the campus, and another cannot come to campus. When the interviews have been completed a decision will be made about the Geology candidates.

Ashland Trip: Currently scheduled for May 5th. The likely plays we will be seeing are "As You Like It" and "Tracy's Tiger". The CHCSA will pay for one of the two plays, and the student pays for the other. Group rates are $25 per person. The CHCSA has budgeted for 20-30 people to attend this trip. The plan is to see a matinee on Saturday and then an evening show. Transportation may be carpooling or the use of ASUO vans. Two pre-trip meetings are being planned, one of which should be held before Spring Break. If you are interested in this trip, there should be posters with information appearing soon in Chapman. If you are willing to help with transportation, such as offering to drive, please inform the Amber and Erin, who are organizing this trip.

The Very Little Theater trip is still scheduled for April 12th. This is a more informal outing, costing very little and allowing for a relaxed evening of theater. Adam is currently coordinating this trip. More information will be posted as the date nears.

A Meal with Professor Bishop: This has yet to be definitely scheduled, but it will most likely be between weeks 2 and 3 of Spring Term, and will be a potluck. A sign-up sheet will be posted in Chapman when more details are concluded. Please indicate upon signing if you have any dietary restrictions.

Camping Trip: This event is proposed for Saturday, May 19th, when the weather is likely to be warmest. Transport will be bus. The campsite is at Fern Ridge, and the CHCSA will need to hold a pre-trip meeting to get a head count before making reservations for the site. If anyone has any camping equipment they'd like to offer, please speak with Emily Casey and Daniel Keller, who are organizing this trip. A poster should be appearing during Spring Term in Chapman with further information.

End of Year BBQ: The tentative date for this event if the Friday of week 10. CHCSA officer elections may be held during this event, so Honors students should definitely come to eat and have their voices heard!

Bylaws: Adam has written a resolution for the CHCSA to create a committee, consisting of Treasurer, Secretary, and three others, to rework the bylaws. Those in attendance voted and the resolution passed unanimously. . The five committee members are Adam Kendall, Samantha Johnson, Eva Sylwester, Allison Rowe, and Mary Kay Bansmer. Meetings concerning the bylaws will be separate from regular CHCSA meetings, and will be open to all Honors students. The bylaws will be completed by April 30th, 2007.

High Five: The trivia club has settled on Mondays at 5:30pm for a meeting time.

CHCSA Meeting Minutes February 15, 2007

In attendance: Eva Sylwester, Angela Wu, Allison Rowe, Samantha Johnson, Emily Casey, Adam Kendall, Daniel Keller, Mary Kay Bansmer, Christina, Amber, Caitlin, Erin.
(Note: If you attended this meeting and would like me to add your last name, please comment on the blog and I will correct it.)

Introductions.

Angela informed us that the lounge shopping trip went well. Students seem to be enjoying the new pillows and folding trays.

Search committee updates: One literature professor candidate has already visited the CHC, the other is coming on Monday the 19th. Geology professor candidates are coming between March 14th and 15th. Exact times are not yet set.

February 19th-20th Literature candidate Travis Zadeh will visit the CHC. Several CHCSA officers had lunch with him, and office hours are held Tuesday from 1:30-2:30pm. On the 19th he will also give a lecture at 4pm.

Professor Schumann is participating in The Americana concert performance. Historic slide photos will be set in time with the music. Afterward there will be chocolate served from several local bakeries. Tickets for CHC students are subsidized by the CHC and cost only $5. Students can take the EMX bus to the concert hall in Springfield.

Adam informed us about the budget. He has posted a copy of the budget to this blog, please refer to it for more information. There will be a surplus of $1,172 at the end of this year if we do not alter the budget. It was noted that none of the CHCSA funds come from student fees. Student fees pay faculty salaries only. CHC alumni donate to the CHCSA.

Ashland Trip Revisited: Some CHC students expressed interest in keeping the Ashland trip, and it was worked out that Erin and Amber would organize an Ashland trip for Spring term. It may be an overnight trip, with a possibility of camping in Ashland or staying overnight at South Oregon University if that is possible. Angela will contact S. Oregon University about staying overnight. There are many local nature activities in Ashland that we could also enjoy during the weekend.

As far as drivers are concerned, either we will carpool and sign liability forms or the CHCSA could rent ASUO vans, provided we have a registered driver.

Ashland tickets range from $27-$35. The CHCSA would pay $20-$25 at the price of a student group discount. We might see a night show on Saturday and a matinee Sunday before driving back to Eugene. Adam will send forms to the organizers. The time of this trip is likely to be late April or early May. Check back for further details.

Beach trip: In making the Ashland trip a weekend-long event, the beach trip is most likely cancelled for this year. The planning is incomplete for this trip, and so we will make an effort to start planning for next year, and make this trip an early Fall one.

Very Little Theater trip: This event has not yet been cancelled. If you want to visit a theater with your fellow CHC students but can’t afford Ashland or can’t take time off for a weekend trip, an evening out at the theater might be just the ticket. Keep checking back to see the status of this trip. Also, come to a CHCSA meeting and let the officers know if you would like to keep both theater options.

CHCSA General Meeting Minutes February 1, 2007

In attendance: Eva Sylwester, Allison Rowe, Samantha Johnson, Emily Casey, Adam Kendall, Daniel Keller, Mary Kay Bansmer and Sarah Koski.

Ski trip: Emily informed us that nobody showed up to the pre-trip meeting. She has sent out emails and hopes to reschedule the trip for this week or the next.

Adam informed us that the dates for the CHCSA hiring committee lunches are to be February 8th and February 19th. Both lunches will be 12 PM at Marche on campus. CHCSA officers will have a chance to meet the candidates at these lunches. The lunches will be paid for by the CHCSA.

Each mock class taught by the candidates will be taped. The CHCSA will hold a screening of these tapes in the CHC library to give students a chance to see their possible future professors. The CHCSA will provide snacks, so come and check it out!

2006 alumnus Sarah Koski informed the CHCSA that enough money has been secured for the purchase of the chandelier but not enough to install it. The CHC office has offered to help allay the costs of instillation. Also, the study required by U of O before putting in the chandelier is still in process. She suggested we shop at T.J. Max’s Homegoods store for lounge décor.

CHCSA shopping trip has been scheduled for Thursday instead of the officer’s meeting.

Very Little Theater trip: CHC will pay for the tickets and organize dinner afterwards. CHCSA needs to know by mid-February how many people are coming.

Note: There is apparently concern within the student body about the canceling of the Ashland trip this year. If so, please come to General Meetings and be part of the discourse. We do want to hear from you!
